Bitter Melon
In the book bitter melon the main character and her mother have a struggling relationship. Her mother wants what is best for her but, she wants something else. This story is a great representation of a girl struggling the find herself in a world that won't let her get free. For example the main character is raised by a very strict Chinese mother that expects the most from her. For example the mother wants her to get straight A's and get into Berkley, but the main character wants to be a writer and go to a small collage that her teacher recommended. It starts out starts out with the girl ending up in speech instead of calculus. But she fell in love with speech, so she started lying to her mom, because she knew that he mom would have never allowed her to take speech. This shows their struggling relationship because the daughter is not able to talk to her mother about anything and she feels trapped
In the end of the book, the main character does get into the collage she wanted called, Scripps. At first her mother lies to her and tells her she didn't get in, but when she finds out she did get in she gets really mad, but this lets her break her shell. She tells her mother that she wants to go to this collage and runs away. But then in the epilogue she realizes how good it is for someone to find their own path and not just the one her mother laid out for her.
