Memoir

We didn’t even say hi; we just ran up and hugged each other. She cried and I just looked off into the distance as I felt her body shake. The wind blew through my hair and a shiver ran down my back.
“It’s just so horrible!” She said.
I nodded and looked away, afraid I would start crying too.
“It just came out of nowhere, that what his dad said,” She took a deep breath and wiped her nose.
She turned to face me and I could feel her eyes burning holes in my back but I didn’t turn around. My feet started tracing the cobble stones on the ground in one big circle.
“Grace?” I stopped walking and turned to face her. “He’s dead, Gabe’s dead!”
She nodded and I started to cry. After a few minutes I stopped, like I had run out of tears. It felt like I was in a deep haze. Sounds sounded muffled like, like a pair of hands was clasped over my ears. “Grace your mom said it was time for you to go home.”
I nodded and gave her another hug. As we walked home I noticed no leaves were left on the trees, but I was sure there was some yesterday. The wind was blowing but it wasn’t making a sound. Who knew silence could be the loudest sound? But then I realized it wasn’t silent. As in walked my feet were stepping on leaves and crinkling them like paper. The cars on the street were honking and moving swiftly down the street. Water was rushing out from underneath passing cars splashing people, making them scream. The world wasn’t silent, it was dead, just one persons’ world, and that made me sad. It made me sad knowing that he would never grow up, never have a life past fourth grade. He would never have a girlfriend, a wife, a child. And I also wanted to know why. Why it was his time to die. People always say that everyone dies for a reason, but what reason could a nine year old have to die?  “Grace?”
I looked up and we were in front of my house. Dirty brick staring down at me as I clutched the cold iron fence. I looked at my mom and walked through the door way of my house, letting its warmth pull me in; away from the world that just took a friend.
